Denmark has just been awarded the Wheelchair Rugby European Championship 2009. The championship will take place in October 2009 and the City of Hillerød will host 12 European wheelchair Rugby teams.

The International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation (IWAS) has just appointed Denmark the host of the Wheelchair Rugby European Championship 2009. 2009 has been announced as The Year of Sports in Denmark with great focus on large sport events and this championship will contribute to putting Denmark on the international sports agenda during The Year of Sports.

The Wheelchair Rugby European Championship will take place in the City of Hillerød from 14 to 17 October 2009 at the venue called FrederiksborgCentret. 12 teams from all over Europe will participate which will amount to approx.110 players. Along with helpers, referees and officials the total number of participates will amount to approx. 260.

The planning of the European Championship has already started at the organizing committee in Denmark and it is expected that the event will make a great impact on the City of Hillerød in October 2009 with different activities in connection with the event. Wheelchair Rugby is a sport full of action and there will be a lot of action at the venue when 12 team fight for the title as European Champions in Wheelchair Rugby.

” The Wheelchair Rugby European Championship will be a huge event in Hillerød. 110 players from 12 nations will do their outmost so the City of Hillerød will be filled with sport and action during the days the championship will takes place. At the same time we expect that this championship will appeal to a lot of spectators mostly due to the fact that the sport is packed with action and partly because the championship will take place during the fall break here in Denmark where a lot of people have time of from work”, says Mette Holstein, Chairperson for the local organizing committee in Denmark.

It was the wheelchair friendly facilities in Hillerød that contributed to the fact that Denmark was awarded the Wheelchair Rugby European Championship 2009. In late September 2008 the venue FrederiksborgCentret and Hotel Hillerød set the perfect settings for a site visit from representatives from IWAS. Both places impressed the representatives due to the wheelchair friendly surroundings.

Denmark has great experience in arranging championships like the Wheelchair Rugby European Championship. Denmark was also the host for the Wheelchair Rugby European Championship 2005.
