2016 IWRF Rio Paralympic Qualifier Update

Dear IWRF Members,

The IWRF received a total of eight completed bids, including fees, to host the 2016 IWRF Paralympic Qualification Tournament. Bids were received from:

  • Bogota, Colombia
  • Velje, Denmark
  • Paris, France
  • Dublin, Ireland
  • Christchurch, New Zealand
  • Katowice, Poland
  • Nottwil, Switzerland
  • Pearland, United States

This level of interest in hosting the event is unprecedented, and IWRF appreciates that so many members were willing to take on this event.

The bid process had planned for site evaluation visits to be done on an ongoing basis including some evaluations held prior to the deadline. However, most bids and process fees were not received until very close to the deadline, so earlier site evaluations could not take place. With a short timeline to select the winning bid, it is not possible to conduct site visits for all bids within the time available.

All bids were reviewed by a selection committee consisting of Eron Main, IWRF Chief Executive Officer; Kathy Newman, Chair of the IWRF Competitions Committee; John Timms, IWRF Technical Delegate for the 2016 Paralympic Qualification Tournament; and Jens Sauerbier, IWRF Athlete Representative. This assessment was done to select bids that would proceed to further evaluation. Bids which were not selected for further evaluation will have their full bid fees will be returned.

The committee decided to proceed to a site evaluation for the following bids:

  • Katowice, Poland
  • Nottwil, Switzerland
  • Paris, France

Site visits will take place the week of December 7 with a final site selection decision to be made no later than December 15.

Based on the bids selected for further evaluation, the 2016 Paralympic Qualification Tournament will take place no earlier than April 13, 2016. The exact dates will be confirmed when the final selection decision is made.
