Game 6 Recap: CAN vs BEL

When Canada and Belgium met at the Canada Cup in June, the game came down to a narrow one-point victory for Canada. This time, the Canadians, smarting from a loss to Australia, were looking to re-establish their dominance by claiming their first win. To do so, they relied on the energy from 18-year-old rookie phenom Zak Madell, who worked in tandem with veteran Mike Whitehead to bring speed and force. Dominant 3.5 Lars Mertens, however, wasn’t going to let them get the easy victory. Mertens and the Belgians broke Canada’s press, but by the end of the first it was 16-14 for Canada. The game remained civil throughout, with fewer hard hits and spills than in other matches as both sides opted for a more strategy-focused game. By half it was 29-26 and still very much anyone’s game. In the second half, however, Canada’s low pointers were able to hold up Lars Mertens and Belgium struggled to score. Canada pulled away and ended the match 57-50.
